Pressure, pushing down on me…
We’ve all been there: We find ourselves in a pressure-packed situation where we must get an important job done in the face of adversity. Maybe we’re on a time crunch. Or maybe we’re understaffed or under-resourced. Maybe we’re performing a task that is way out of our comfort zone. Or maybe we find that business with a VIP customer is hanging in the balance. Whatever the case may be, we need to be able to step up to the challenge when the heat dial gets turned up.
Business Insider has 14 ways to perform your best in high-pressure situations. Here are a few:
Think of the moment as a challenge, not a life-or-death threat
Our fight-or-flight instincts often arise when we’re under the gun. Our body feels like our immediate decisions will determine our ultimate survival. Fortunately for us, that’s very rarely the case. These situations are challenges, of course not without consequence, but they surely are not life-or-death.
Remember that second chances happen
While in the moment of a stressful state of affairs, it can sometimes feel like “this is it.” And that our story will be written based off of this single outcome. But in actuality, this is just one challenge of many to come. The hope is that our hard work and preparation will lead to many more resulting in our favor than not.
Focus on the task, not the outcome
Often times, the upshot of an endeavor is partially out of our control. We can make every correct decision throughout and it could still not go our way. So we need to focus on giving our best effort on everything that we can control, and be at peace with what we cannot. Having this mentality means that we’ll always put ourselves in the best position to succeed.
